Adventure – A little spring fishing in the Laramie Valley…

| | |

With Wyoming snow pack down to 22% of the average, the fishing season this spring seems to be starting much earlier compared to last years record breaking 220% of average snow pack that made the rivers rage for what seemed like a never-ending spring runoff that ran through most of the mountain summer. The pass over the Snowy Range Mountains opened about a month earlier than last year, and the snow is melted from most of the valleys already — which means that I’ve already been hiking in the mountains at 10,000 feet and it’s not even JUNE yet!

Between the early and mild melt season and my recent completion of my masters degree in geology from the University of Wyoming, I’ve had some time to go fishing — and time to find new ways to document and share my experiences with you guys! To kick off the warmer half of the fishing season in Wyoming (because technically, it never ends), I took a stab at making my first ever video (!) from a day fishing the Big Laramie River with a friend. The entire video was shot with my recently acquired GoPro camera.

I fish Tenkara, which is a traditional Japanese style of fly fishing that only uses fly, line, and rod — no reel. Although all of my fishing friends use the traditional Western style rods, I will be investing all of my time in learning how to fish simply with Tenkara. Hopefully there will be more video showcasing Tenkara (Alert to ounce counting backpackers — Tenkara is the way to go!) and many more hungry trout.

Happy fishing!
