The seasons change, the leaves start to turn, and then just when you think you’re going to spend the next few weeks enjoying the beautiful fall colors, the same unthinkable event happens: snow. Fall above 8,000 feet in the mountains of Wyoming seems to progress the same every year. The leaves start to turn around the last few weeks of summer and just as fall color starts to approach peak, Mr. Jack Frost rears his head and reminds us all that winter in the high country is NEVER far off. This year, yet again, just a few short weeks after we said goodbye to summer and the bright yellow aspen groves started to peak, the rugged Wyoming mountains outside of Laramie were delivered a few heavy snowfalls in late September and early October that closed the highways and turned autumn into a winter wonderland of white.

Although there are few sights more beautiful than a blanket of fresh white snow on bright yellow aspen groves, the cold temperatures usually freeze the plants and all too often cause the leaves to drop before fall is technically even half over. Fall in the mountains is short and sweet, so when you see those leaves start to turn in the alpine country, definitely don’t delay in enjoying their rich color because you never know when winter will make an appearance and remind you that as they say, there are really only two season in Wyoming: winter, and summer road construction. Either way, even if fall color only lasts a few weeks before the snow flies, it is always a rare and beautiful sight, however long it lasts.
